Multiple Departments Respond to Residential Structure Fire at Lake of the Woods

On Friday, March 26th crews from multiple departments responded to assist Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company 29 with the report of a structure fire within the Lake of the Woods, a private, planned residential community of single-family homes located in the northeastern part of Orange County, Virginia.

Upon arriving on scene, Engine 29 and Truck 29 found one home fully involved with fire. The occupants had self-evacuated and were evaluated by local EMS while the crews went to work extinguishing the structure and protecting nearby homes.

Crews from Mine Run Volunteer Fire Company 21, Orange Volunteer Fire Company 23, County of Orange Fire and EMS, Spotsylvania Station 7, Spotsylvania Station 5, Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department, Rapidan Volunteer Fire Department, Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad worked into the early morning to control and prevent the fire from further spreading.

Early activation of the emergency services network and the residents having a fire evacuation plan were key contributors to preserving life and property. Damage to the home was significant. Authorities could not provide the full extent of the damage, but the home was determined to be uninhabitable, and two occupants were injured. No injuries to the responders were reported but one local FF was transported to a local hospital and released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the County of Orange Fire & EMS officials.

The Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company responded to over 680 calls for service in 2020 and serves the various residents, commercial businesses, houses of worship and academic institutions located in the Locust Grove, Germanna and Wilderness areas of Eastern Orange County along Route 3 and Route 20.
